Transit Choice’s Saving Baltimore’s TIGERs Campaign
Our Campaign
Transit Choices won an American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Local Coalition grant to implement a social media driven, grassroots campaign to educate Baltimore-area residents on: The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Program and current area projects receiving funding; other transformative regional projects that could utilize the program and; the current funding state of the TIGER program.
The campaign will end with a call to action for area residents to contact federal legislators to support the TIGER program and provide form letters and social media posts for constituents to send. In particular, the call to action would focus on targeting local House Appropriations Committee members Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD-1) and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD-2) and Senate Appropriations Committee Member Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).
In both the Trump Administrations FY ’18 budget proposal and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) FY ’18 Appropriations bill, the TIGER program is zeroed out. In September, the House passed a spending package without TIGER funding for 2018. Since 2009, the program TIGER program has at least received $450 million in annual funding. Without this program, major Baltimore transportation priorities like the Baltimore & Potomac Amtrak Tunnel, the CSX Howard Street Tunnel, and the redevelopment and light rail extension of Port Covington may not come to fruition.
