Baltimore City DOT – Traffic Signal Retiming

All traffic signals in Baltimore are being retimed to adjust for population growth and to improve pedestrian safety.

    1,100. Baltimore has a lot of traffic signals.

  • How long will the retiming take? 
    3 years. The project began in April of 2023, and some areas are already completed. The whole project will be done in 2026.

    The entire city!

  • What does it take to retime a traffic signal? 
    The process includes:
    📊 Data Collection Phase: determining existing timings, measuring traffic volumes, assessing roadway characteristics, and conducting field observations
    📈 Analysis Phase: using traffic software to create models of the traffic conditions and determine how changes can benefit operations
    🚦 Implementation Phase: programming the signal controllers with the new timing
    🎚️ Post Implementation: ongoing monitoring and adjustments as needed
