We joined the Maryland Department of Planning and the Smart Growth Network recently as Todd Litman of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute investigated how quickly self-driving vehicles are likely to develop and be deployed; their likely benefits and costs; and how they are likely to affect travel demands and planning decisions such as optimal road, parking and public transit supply.
Optimists predict that autonomous vehicles will be sufficiently reliable, affordable and common to displace most human driving, providing huge savings and benefits by 2030.
