MTA 5th Bus Division

5th Bus Division Acquisition Approved!

Transit Choices is pleased to announce that the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will purchase a 22-acre site in East Baltimore as part of its initiative to support additional bus service and build a new bus operations hub. The Maryland Board of Public Works approved the $16.5 million acquisition of the property at 1601 Edison Highway according to the meeting’s agenda on July 22, 2026.

Located near Clifton, the industrial site will become the MTA’s fifth bus division, providing additional capacity for bus storage, maintenance operations, and charging infrastructure for zero-emission buses.

The fifth bus division is a key component of BMORE Bus, the state’s transit improvement plan unveiled last year to expand and enhance bus service throughout the Baltimore region with more frequent and reliable service. The BMORE Bus plan also includes $365 million to buy more buses and $130 million annually to expand its workforce. The current funding for the East Baltimore project is allocated in the Maryland Department of Transportation’s six-year capital projects budget.

We applaud the MTA for taking this important step toward building a better bus network. Expanding bus operations and investing in modern infrastructure will help support more frequent, reliable, and efficient bus service for riders throughout the Baltimore region.

Thank you.
